As per subject: pfSense 2.2.2 (x64) auto-upgrades to 2.2.6 (i386).
That is the wrong architecture.

Your config must be pointing to the wrong architecture URL. If you restored a config from a different unit that had a manually-chosen URL, that setting is retained.
The problem no longer exists in 2.3 as it's impossible to manually select a different architecture. See #5414
