I just installed BIND for the first time on a pfSense 2.4.5. After installation, despite the fact that I created a View with Recursion=yes, match-clients=any and allow-recursion=any, any recursive query would fail. I noticed that the file /cf/named/etc/namedb/named.root was empty (size=0). After manually copying /usr/local/etc/namedb/named.root over it and restarting named, recursive resolution started to work. Shouldn't the named.root contain something initially?
