Description
e1000 NICs, em(4) and igb(4), can link at half-duplex when connected to a fixed speed/duplex device. This appears to be due to this https://reviews.freebsd.org/D47336 that allowed NICs with fixed speed to still negotiate duplex. That has now been reverted upstream but 2.8.X was branched before that happened.
