Feature #3731
closedrequest: kernel module "zfs.ko" for optional zfs file support, and options VIMAGE
0%
Description
I am aware that ZFS is a storage feature and not required by Router / Firewalls. However to include gives more options for those wanting to make "single-box" solution. That is more environmentally friendly (fewer servers).
If you build / include / distribute a zfs.ko kernel module that gives better feature - parity with competing FreeBSD-based live USB distributions. (FreeNAS and NAS4Free). And mean that single-box people do not need to choose either one or other feature set, or have to dismiss pfSense due to lack of ZFS support.
Of course, ELC can only build these kernel .ko's, hence the request.
Another useful kernel option is "options vimage". With "device pair".
That useful for FreeBSD jails to have a properly segregated virtual network endpoint. However I am more hesitant to suggest that one since (unlike zfs.ko) it cannot be compiled separately and an optionally loadable ".ko" file. You may try enabling "options VIMAGE" in some FreeBSD10 test builds. It was known to cause conflict with other networking kernel stuff in FreeBSD 9.X. Those VIMAGE conflict were a big worry on FreeBSD 9. Situation may be slightly better in 10+ RELEASE.
We realise that better jails and storage features do not matter for the firewall / router aspect. But many thanks for any consideration.

zfs is present on 2.2 builds.
VIMAGE its not possible and in the future depends on the roadmap.
