<p>I agree. pfsense could be run in a VM alongside other VMs, using another hypervisor, but I prefer to run it on bare metal for better I/O performance. Then instead of managing more hardware, some useful services could run on the same router in VMs like pihole on debian, and ubiquiti unifi controller for wifi management.</p>
<p>Of course, bhyve on pfsense can be manually setup and used, but without official support there would be difficulties upgrading and maintaining it.</p>
