Description

(First-time user reporting an issue here, so please bear over with me if I did something wrong).

I would've preferred to add my comments to #15651, because that task is already in progress. So I tried to "reply" to #15651 but I keep getting: " Plus target version cannot be blank ", so I cannot add anything to that existing ticket (and maybe that's by design)??? I didn't know until recently that Kea DHCP shouldn't be used and it has annoying bugs when used together with unbound DNS resolution. I've solved my problem but realized I need to use the socalled "deprecated ISC" DHCP-method so this is what I'm doing now. My problem pertains to the DNS Resolver (unbound) together with Kea DHCP. Currently, there's a message saying " ISC DHCP has reached end-of-life and will be removed in a future version of pfSense. Visit System > Advanced > Networking to switch DHCP backend ". But I don't want to go there right now because after many hours of investigating I've found out that these DNS Resolver settings are unavailable with KEA DHCP:
  • DHCP Registration : "Register DHCP leases in the DNS Resolver"
  • Static DHCP : "Register DHCP static mappings in the DNS Resolver"

With the current pfSense version that I'm on (2.7.2) these two settings are not available unless I choose the "deprecated" ISC DHCP-method. I would like to hopefully contribute such that these 2 options are available in the next version and also fully working (at least before removing the deprecated ISC DHCP-method). It's not only that they aren't there with Kea DHCP. Things are also not working properly in the current version with Kea, because for some weird or random reason they used to work (at least I had DNS resolution working for a while) - and then suddenly DNS resolution for static mappings and dynamic DHCP leases aren't (or weren't) working. I cannot exactly tell why local DNS resolution stopped working with Kea DHCP - but eventually I discovered that these things only work "normal" when I use the "deprecated ISC" DHCP-server. To be more specific, I found out that /var/unbound/dhcpleases_entries.conf was empty, after the unbound DNS resolution stopped working (and I think that host_entries.conf was also empty). When things are working properly, these two files should not be empty. I tried clicking the save-button for "Services/DNS Resolver/General Settings" but this just re-created these two empty files. This is in my opinion a bug. And so this is what I started by explaining. Since this is already "in progress" I think this could/should be coupled to #15651. Let me know if there are questions or anything I can help with to this description - thanks!

  • Status changed from New to Not a Bug

The feature is not supported on Kea as it's not fully implemented yet. Whatever you are able to make happen now may work partially but is not actually supported, so bug reports against that are not valid.

Proper support will be ready soon, keep an eye on #15651
