Description

Current pfSense setup does not make a distinction between security updates and general updates. The latter requires a reboot more often.

It would offer better security (certainly concerning the recent SSL vulnerabilities) to give the user the possibility to let the security updates apply automatically.
(daily/weekly/monthly)

Maybe detect if a reboot would be necessary and email the user before applying if necessary?

some of that falls into work Renato's doing for 2.3 and newer in improving the update system in general. The remainder isn't really possible - we've never had only security update releases, they always have at least some non-security fixes (as is the norm for such software). Pretty much every release we've ever put out has some security-related component as well. So there isn't any differentiation along those lines to be made.
