It would be nice if there was some sort of alerting or notification when pfSense has a new upgrade available (via email).

Sending an e-mail notification for that from the firewall itself isn't really a good idea. There are many other ways to monitor those things by e-mail, such as subscribing to our release announcement mailing list.
