Open-VM-Tools 10.1.0_2,1 on ESXi 6.5 causes gateway disconnects

Description
I run pfSense 2.4.4 on ESXi 6.5 on a 2010 Mac Mini.
After updating Open-VM-Tools to 10.1.0_2,1 I started getting disconnected from my ISP every 30 minutes. They tell me that their side will re-connect every 30 minutes (presumably this is a DHCP release/refresh).
I had to restart the pfSense VM to get it to reconnect (for another 30 minutes).
After removing Open-VM-Tools altogether the dropouts stopped.
I have been running this set-up for months, usually with no problem. However, I have experienced the 30 minute dropouts at other times when I've tinkered with network settings. The dropouts previously resolved themselves after a few hours and I never figured out why they were happening.
My system is:
Version 2.4.4-RELEASE-p3 (amd64)
built on Wed May 15 18:53:44 EDT 2019
FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE-p10
The system is on the latest version.
