On https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/aws-vpn-appliance/faq.html

we recommend users use the option "Get System Log" to show the console menu and automatically generated password if one wasn't set manually.

however, in certain cases (I hit the issue myself) the system log may not show up after clicking "Get System Log" and the user may only be presented with a block box. in such a case, the user should wait a few moments (to allow the system to boot and console menu to appear) and then use the option "Get Instance Screenshot" instead.
