Todo #11849
closedCARP mode when upgrading HA clusters
0%
Description
The current documentation:
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/install/upgrade-guide-ha.html
says to do this:
Switch CARP to maintenance mode on primary from Status > CARP
However, both the Primary and Failover server have a CARP maintenance mode button at the top of the page. Depending on when in the process you look at it, the primary says "Leave Persistent CARP Maintenance Mode" and the failover says "Enter Persistent CARP Maintenance Mode" but nothing indicates that you have switched modes, or when.
Also, the icons of master and backup don't seem consistent with the modes. In fact, they seem to be more affected by the mode of the other node more than the mode of their own – although that might have been me getting confused. However, I couldn't see anything in the documentation explaining the relationship between the two nodes and their modes.
Basically, it isn't clear what the user should expect or what state each node should be in before you click the update button. Since updating is a stressful process that doesn't happen enough to get routine, it would be good to have it spelled out in a bit more detail.
This was a suggestion, not a criticism. You people do a great job, and it is much appreciated!

- Status changed from New to Rejected
This is all as expected.
If the button says "Enter ..." then it's not in maintenance mode. If the button says "Leave ..." it is in maintenance mode.
Maintenance mode sets a higher advertisement value for the VIPs which usually nudges them into a backup state -- the state of the VIPs isn't necessarily tied to maintenance mode since if both are in maintenance mode, the primary may still be elected master since it's still the lowest/fastest advertisement.
