Description

Running pfSense 2.4.5 in Proxmox with Intel NIC passed through was stable for several months. After updating to 2.5.1, the entire hypervisor began to crash, sometimes multiple times in a single day. The behavior was sporadic, but the longest uptime was less than 1.5 days, crashing 3 or 4 times over the course of 4 days. After moving the VM to another node, changing it to a “router-on-a-stick” and removing the NIC pass through, all systems have been stable for a week.

I’ve heard multiple others mention they are having similar issues with virtualized pfSense 2.5.0/1 with NIC passthrough as well, including in the Facebook groups and pfSense forum.

Unfortunately, they way in which everything is crashing, I’ve not been able to find ANYTHING in the logs.

Unlikely to be specific to pfSense, and not much to go on. You should try it on development snapshots first, and if it's still a problem there, try to reproduce it on a plain FreeBSD installation. If you can reproduce it there, report the problem upstream to FreeBSD.
