Feature #12166
closedDashboard Interfaces should show "physical" interface failures
0%
Description
*Hello,
Since two days I did have severe network problems. So I did start investigating the problem. One of the first things I checked was the pfSense dashboard especially the interfaces widget. No problems there every thing green * :) :) * * __ *
So I did try to find the problem elsewhere ... However ..... the problem turned out to be the pfSense router !!!!
A few remarks:
- widget title is "interfaces" however a more precise title would be "logical-interfaces / vlans"
- each logical interface (vlan) is based on the transport level below. In most cases one or more Ethernet devices
- >> THE PROBLEM << the "logical interfaces" are shown green/working perfect even if the "transport layer below is not working properly" __
- to the extreme, they even show "Green/OK if the ethernet which carries one or more vlans is completely removed !!!!
That is of cause not at all correct. So IMHO:
1) "interfaces" based on a not working "transportlayer" should show red
2) additional a widget showing the status of all transportlayer/ethernet interfases should be available
Since the dashboard as it is now give an absolutely wrong status impression, improvements are required IMHO.
Sincerely,
Louis*

I can't reproduce what you're talking about here. If I unplug an interface, the VLANs on that interface also show as down in the widget.
There maybe something unique about your setup or environment causing this, but this site is not for support or diagnostic discussion.
For assistance in solving problems, please post on the Netgate Forum or the pfSense Subreddit .

@Jim,
I do not support your reaction. At this very moment my pfSense router its 10 G x520 card is defect and has been removed from the system. Never the less the interfaces are all shown as green/OK. Which is of cause ridiculous!
Hereby three pictures just token from my system as said with the x520 card (ix0 and ix1) removed:
- one showing the dashboard
- the second one the actual vlan assignment
- the third one showing the pfsense reaction if I try the vlan assignment without any changes :)
I hope this convinces you !
Sincerely,
Louis
PS could you remove my Dashboard picture, since it shows more info than I should have shared :)

- Status changed from Rejected to Duplicate
That is a much different issue than the status not reflecting if the underlying interface is down which is what you described above in a roundabout way.
That is not a status problem but an interface assignment problem, you have a completely invalid configuration that should never have booted, let alone showed you a dashboard.
I created #12170 for that scenario and this one can remain closed.

- Is duplicate of Bug #12170: Interface assignment mismatch is not detected if VLAN-only parent interface is removed added
