Bug #14237
closedIntermittent packet loss related to DHCP with Multi-WAN
0%
Description
I'm sorry for somewhat vague description, there might be actually a few issues here, described one the forum: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/176908/intermittent-packet-loss-related-to-dhcp-with-multi-wan
What I observe is that one WAN interface has 15 minutes DHCP lease time, pfSense tries to renew it every 7 minutes and quite often fails to do so.
As the result interface goes down, which quite often causes pfSense to break networking in a way that even its GUI is not available for some seconds (networking is dead completely: I can't SSH or ping either during this time).
TL;DR: I open pfSense for less than an hour and charts stop updating at some point due to networking issues to pfSense itself.
This cascade of events likely includes several bugs, I attached extra logs in forum thread mentioned above.
Configured category to DHCP for now.
This happened on 2.6.x, still happens on 2.7.0-DEVELOPMENT (built on Fri Mar 10 06:05:33 UTC 2023).
Happy to do additional testing, if it turns out there are a few issues, this can be used as an umbrella for them.

What does a packet capture on a WAN interface with a failed DHCP lease renewal look like?
This redmine is very vague and doesn't provide enough specific information about the issue to be a proper bug report. More troubleshooting is necessary to determine the root cause of this problem.

- File dhcp-packetcapture.cap dhcp-packetcapture.cap added
Uploading packet capture on ports 67 and 68 on WAN2 interface, pfSense reported 0.12% packet loss during 11:31:00 and 1.02% packet loss during 11:32:00 according to quality monitoring, covered by packet capture.
I know it is very vague and thankful for clarifying questions. Let me know if there are any other details I can provide here.

Updated to 2.7.0-BETA, still the same issue. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help diagnose and fix this.

Still an issue on 2.7.0 release. Seems to happen more frequently now, but might also be a coincidence.

Can someone look into this? It is certainly unexpected that all networking on pfSense goes down for some time when one of WAN goes down.

The reason this happens is that I had pfSense configured to drop all states in case one of gateways goes down.
The rest of DHCP stuff is described in https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/14604
This issue can be closed.
