pfSense Installer - fails on Dell R340
Added by Michael Mercier about 8 hours ago.
Updated about 2 hours ago.
Affected Architecture:
amd64
Description
Hello,
I am experiencing a failure when attempting to install pfSense on a Dell R340 when using the netgate-installer-v1.1.1-RELEASE-amd64.iso image. Below is a screenshot of the failure:

I am able to boot the FreeBSD-14.3-RELEASE-amd64-disc1.iso image on the same device, successfully logging into the live image.
Not sure what additional information is required? Please let me know and I will provide details.
NOTES:
1. I am attempting this on two different Dell R340 servers (with the same PCI expansion devices installed)
2. Both devices have been firmware upgraded to the latest via Dell iDRAC
Files
Addition details I forgot to include in the original post.
PCI cards installed
Dell 0YGCV4 - Broadcom 5719 Quad-Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter
Dell 061J1X - Broadcom 57402 Dual-Port 10GbE SFP+ PCI-Express Low-Profile Network Adapter
I tried the pfSense installer in UEFI and BIOS mode, both fail. The image included in the original post was a BIOS install failing. Using the FreeBSD installer I can boot to the 'live system' with either UEFI or BIOS mode.
The PERC H730P controller mode set to HBA.
- Priority changed from High to Normal
Using the following ISO image:
FreeBSD-16.0-CURRENT-amd64-20260113-2b60e628d3b1-283055-disc1.iso
1. I can successfully boot into a live system in UEFI or BIOS mode.
2. If I attempt an install in UEFI mode, I will see intermittent mfi(X) error messages. After the install is complete, the server will complain there is no bootable media after reboot.
3. If I attempt an install in BIOS mode, I also see intermittent mfi(X) error messages. After the install is complete, the server will successfully boot into FreeBSD.
Example mfi(X) errors:
