Description

This was discussed on the forum at https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=94104.0

I have a machine that boots off the 2.1.5 CD just fine. However, booting a 2.2.2 CD, either amd64 or i386, fails with a "BTX halted" error. I also took a 2.1.5 installation on a hard drive and used "Upgrade from console" to update it to 2.2.2. Upon rebooting the machine, it produced the same error.

Of particular note is the fact that the FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE CD boots just fine on this same machine. I understand that hardware and BIOS incompatibilities can cause a variety of problems. I do not think that is the case here, though, since FreeBSD 10.1 boots just fine.

Here is what shows on the screen when booting the 2.2.2 amd64 CD:

CD Loader 1.2

Building the boot loader arguments
Looking up /BOOT/LOADER... Found
Relocating the loader and the BTX
Starting the BTX loader

BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.02
Consoles: internal video/keyboard
BIOS CD is cd0
BIOS drive C: is disk1

BTX halted

If I try to boot the 2.2.2 i386 CD instead, the error message is identical except that the third number in the line that begins with cs:eip is 64 instead of 78.

When the error message is printed on the screen, the machine is not locked up; I can use Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot the machine.

The machine has a Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard with 1GB RAM and a 2GHz AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU.

If there's any further information that would be helpful, please let me know and I'll do my best to provide it. I would be grateful for any help to get this working.

Thank you!

Does memstick installation work on this machine?

Memstick installation does not work either. It fails with the same error:

BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.02
Consoles: internal video/keyboard
BIOS CD is cd0
BIOS drive C: is disk1

int=00000000  err=00000000  efl=00010246  eip=00036b04

esi=00000000  edi=00000000  ebp=0008fe00  esp=0008fd98
cs=002b  ds=0033  es=0033    fs=0033  gs=0033  ss=0033
cs:eip=f7 35 78 dc 03 00 85 f6-74 05 89 3e 89 5e 04 89

       00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
BTX halted

And I know the USB memstick is good because it boots just fine on another machine.

Lest anyone think that this problem is unique to my one machine...

Since submitting this bug report, four more people have added posts to the forum link given at the top of the original report. They all indicate that they are having what looks to be the same issue.

some have reported this is no longer an issue in 2.3. It's a FreeBSD issue regardless, even with stock 10.1 working, as our ISO is diff from stock in that regard.
