Description

As already mentioned in this thread https://forum.netgate.com/topic/123554/new-latency-every-30-seconds-with-2-4-2-caused-by-radvd-2-17_3/9 , there is an issue with latency spiking every 30 seconds causing packet loss and other issues. The setup is a LACP Link with vlans on it and mutliple wan gateways. This makes IPv6 unusable!

The debug logs of radvd don't show anything unusual.

Disabled the above - the issue mostly went away - the frequency dropped 10 fold at least.

Can confirm that the bug exists in 2.4.4-RELEASE-p1 (amd64)CE.

LAGG protocol is LACP and vlan on the LAGG, pretty much defaults beside of that.

I can confirm, this issue is still present on 2.5.0-DEV. I'm using VLANs on my Onboard Intel(R) PRO/1000 for LAN and stopping radvd instantly solved the packet loss / latency issue.

I have this same issue on an Intel I219-V, router on a stick VLANs config: radvd enabled = massive lag spikes at same time as radvd CPU spike, radvd disabled = no more lag spikes (on pfsense 2.5.1 - unable to use workaround from forum as I can't find a radvd 1.x build for FreeBSD 12).

Attempted to update to radvd 2.19_1 but that just results in the following log spam:

They are both onboard Intel NICs. I think one is the 82574L and the other is the 82579LM.

Just like Daniel above, I also have Vlans. I suspect this happens under a combination of conditions.

Running radvd manually with -d5 with a ping running at the same time, it appears the latency spikes line up with the 2 second gap in the log between printing addresses and "ready", if anyone knows what it's supposed to be doing then?

Looks like I did that wrong (grabbed normal FreeBSD release of radvd, not pfSense patched version)

Just updated to 2.6.0 dev snapshot 20210416 - this incorporates the 2.19_1 multicast fix correctly and appears to have now resolved the issue for me (unless it takes a while to show up post reboot, but it previously hasn't).

This also lines up with what I was seeing earlier, the 2 second gap in the logs is when the 2.17 - 2.19 versions of radvd were leaving and rejoining the group every time, it seems that blocks the interface and introduces the latency and BSD 12 multicast fixes in radvd have stopped my issues. No more lag spikes, no more radvd CPU spikes.

yep make sense, radvd breaking since 2.6 upgrade lined up with a config change that triggered a radvd reload that obviously fails because it's already joined the group, it hasn't broken since I killed the pid and restarted it, I've made your change as a preventative measure so that if another reload is triggered it starts cold and doesn't break again, cheers.
