OpenVPN is deprecating Shared Key mode in OpenVPN 2.6.0 and removing it in a future version (presumably 3.0 or 2.7, whichever comes first). See https://forum.netgate.com/post/1026997 for details there.

We should add warnings to any documentation about shared key mode, and in some cases clean up and potentially remove other references as needed. It isn't gone yet, and will still function, but the logs will contain warnings about it going away and it's better to get people planning on migrating away now rather than waiting until it's gone.
