Description

I spent a bit of time trying to change the network port on the LAN interface and I found out that you cannot change the network port if the interface is enabled.

What I would like is a warning message when you try and change the network port on the LAN (or other) active interface that it is not allowed.

  • Subject changed from No Warning that you cannot change a network port on LAN interface when it is active to Changing a network port may not fully move all settings to the new interface

It does work but you likely need to visit the interface page and save/apply to fully apply the settings, or (worst case) reboot.

I did that quite a bit just last week when testing things and I swapped around WANs and LANs between ports when testing different types of physical interconnections between devices and in most cases it worked but occasionally I had to save/apply the settings or reboot to fully activate things on the new interface.

There is likely some room for improvement here but we don't need to disable the action.

I should of mentioned that I was doing this from (Interfaces --> assignments) page, is there another page I should be aware of?

"save/apply to fully apply the settings"
  • I did click save, the page just refreshed and nothing was changed except pinging my router stops and shortly after I can no longer access the GUI. I then have to do a full reboot at the physical console to restore funcitonality. The change I saved does not save, the LAN shows igb0 even thought I selected igb1 and clicked save. I also tried the reboot as you suggested, this has no effect.
"There is likely some room for improvement here but we don't need to disable the action."
  • There is nothing to disable, it doesn't work and there should be a warning that you need to disable an interface before changing it's network port or change this to a bug for resolution. I am not the only one who has this issue.

I am running:

  • pfSense v2.6.0
  • pfBlockerNG v3.1.0_9
  • Snort v4.1.6
  • some other minor packages

Yes, from the assignments page is where I was speaking of as well, but I meant you may have to save/apply on the relevant Interfaces > Name page as well, such as Interfaces > LAN.

It didn't work for you in your specific test case, but it does work in general from the assignments page. I'm saying we don't need to disallow changing the assignments there or warning that it may not work, we can fix what isn't applying the settings fully.
