Description

Page: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/routing/gateway-configure.html

Feedback: It seems in version 2.6.0 release (amd) built on Mon Jan31 19:57:53 UTC 2022 of Pfsense.
Under the section Advanced Gateway Settings > Data Payload, which reads
"To conserve bandwidth, the dpinger daemon sends a ping with a payload size of 0 by default so that no data is contained within the ICMP echo request. However, in rare circumstances a CPE, ISP router, or intermediate hop may drop or reject ICMP packets without a payload. In these cases, set the payload size above 0. Usually a size of 1 is enough to satisfy affected equipment."

The default seems to now be 1 and no longer 0. Is this indeed the case?

You are correct, the default was 0 but changed to 1.

It had been 0 for a long time, and we added the GUI field (defaulting to 0) in #5830 which was a part of the 2.3 release. In ea0d5cbe0a49ff85ab592aadaafc8e806fd1297e the default was changed to 1, citing the fact that people had issuing passing 0 and also that ICMP pads any payload <60 so it wasn't saving any bandwidth to set 0, so there was no benefit in keeping the default at 0.

I don't see a corresponding Redmine issue for that change, but given the timing it would have changed in/around the 2.4.5-p1 release, so it's been a while.

I'll update that in the docs.
