Description

After upgrading 3 2.6 CE installs to 2.7, all of them experienced high CPU temps. A mitigation was found on reddit to enter this under System Tunables.

dev.hwpstate_intel.0.epp
dev.hwpstate_intel.1.epp
dev.hwpstate_intel.2.epp
dev.hwpstate_intel.3.epp

(Example is for quad core CPU, value would be 0-100, 100 being least CPU activity.)

With this in place, CPU temps are in the 50 c range. Still hotter than the 40's experienced before. As the CPU temps go up, Unbound and OpenVPN fail, Service Watchdog fails to notice or restart processes.

I am not certain but have been told PowerD is no longer functioning in 2.7 because the newest FreeBSD takes thermal management under it's own control. Something to do with Intel SpeedStep or SpeedShift management.
