Description

I've been using the dashboard widget created by Leon Straathof on several pfSense instances and it works great.
https://github.com/LeonStraathof/pfsense-speedtest-widget

The dashboard widget is very convenient, and I have adapted rbicelli's Zabbix script to work with the current version of speedtest-cli for monitoring WAN performance.

I've used it on WAN connections with a variety of bandwidths and get very accurate results, including the 3Gbps service I just installed earlier today.

I know Netgate's position is that speed testing from the firewall is bad and they discourage it; however, due to the general usefulness and convenience of speedtest-cli, I think it should be available in package manager for pfSense 24.03 and up. For all the advanced features that pfSense offers and multitude of "bad" configuration choices that a user can create, it seems strange that providing easy access to a speed test method is met with such resistance.

A simple warning/disclaimer on the package notes should be sufficient to inform users that the results may not be indicitive of a problem with the firewall and that the most accurate results will be obtained by performing testing from devices behind the firewall.

While some find it useful, it isn't a great metric and it is not a practice we want to encourage. Anyone that wants to do that can take the manual steps to do so already, there isn't a compelling reason to make it easier.
