It would be nice to add the ability to send e-mails about hardware statuses and other system processes.

That is way out of scope. This package doesn't monitor logs for strings and notify like that, and the items you mention are not typically part of system logs anyhow, they would be probed by a separate process. Those functions are a part of a full NMS, not a package that setups up logging/log forwarding.
And similar requests for the base system are already covered by other existing issues such as #10467
