Description

Issue:
Traffic going across an IPv6 GRE tunnel running over a tunnelled IPv4 IPsec VPN to the LAN IPv6 address of the remote pfSense box causes the remote box to crash & reboot. All other IPv6 traffic across the GRE interface works as expected

Setup:
  • 2x pfSense 2.1 amd64 boxes (NOT nanobsd), snapshot from 3rd Nov (also tried with earlier snapshot from 11th October)
  • Dynamic WAN IP on each end
  • Working IPv4 IPSEC VPN with tunneled IPv4 phase 2
  • GRE interface configured at each end and assigned to an interface
  • Gateways & Routes configured to send traffic for each site's v6 range over GRE
  • Firewall rules configured to allow traffic across the GRE tunnel
GRE Configuration:
  • Side A

Parent Interface: LAN
GRE remote address: <Side B v4 address>
GRE tunnel local address: <Side A v6 address>
GRE tunnel remote address: <Side B v6 /64>

  • Side B

Parent Interface: LAN
GRE remote address: <Side A v4 address>
GRE tunnel local address: <Side B v6 address>
GRE tunnel remote address: <Side A v6 /64>
