Description
1 Hard drive fails
System locks up (console unable to input on keyboard, no network traffic can't ping access web interface or anything)
Console message:
ata3: timeout waiting to issue command

Only a hard forced reboot will clear it.
what do you think? kernel? gmirror? configuration? it should fail gracefully.

What pfSense version? 2.1.5? 2.2-RC?

That is likely a hardware-related lockup for which the OS can do nothing better. A true RAID adapter may handle that better since the drive interaction is not happening directly at the OS level, but that would depend on the card. There is definitely nothing we can do about that behavior.
