Bug #7036
closed2.4 ZFS on RCC-VE 2440 hangs
0%
Description
RCC-VE 2440, bios version 6
Downloaded 2.4.0.b.20161223.0723 and did a clean install. Auto ZFS, default values, selected da1 (internal flash). Installer finishes with no errors. Select reboot, machine hangs. Restart machine, tries to boot onboard flash and hangs. Let it sit for a while and restarting doesn't help.
I managed to install UFS over the old install and the machine acpi reboots properly but again first boot it doesn't load and seems to hang. Eventually after a few power cycles and letting it load something seems to "kick" it to boot, and after this point every reboot and power up it boots every time with no problem. If that makes sense.

No relevant logs or errors to post. Anything that can be run in the shell after install to help in the bootloader part?

Follow the procedure at http://netgate.com/docs/reference/adi-bios-flash.html#adi-bios-flash-procedure and update to BIOS 08, which you can download from here:
http://firmware.netgate.com/bios/
Even though there are other versions there, use 08.
Reply back here and tell us if that worked.
And also list the exact snapshot image filename you tested with.

Running bios version 08 (ADI_RCCVE-01.00.00.08-nodebug) with no change. pfSense-CE-memstick-ADI-2.4.0-BETA-amd64-20161223-0723.img was used to install onto a usb 3.0 flash drive this time to rule out problems with onboard flash. After selecting reboot in the installer after ZFS install, the system doesn't reboot and freezes. Installer reboots normally after a UFS install. Selecting the drive in the boot menu shows a single '/' in the console with some occasional activity from the drive's LED, but nothing actually loads after leaving it for about 20 minutes.

I also have the same issue on my RCC-VE 2440. I've tried with both Bios 06 and 08, same issue. It takes 15-20 minutes and a lot of luck to get the system to boot for the first time using UFS. I've installed to the onboard flash and a SSD with no difference in results. I've been doing clean installs every 2 weeks since October with the same result every time.

After internal tests, we could install it successfully on 2440 using ZFS. Discussion will continue on forum thread listed here and one of our engineers will send a step-by-step instructions there in the next 24h. If a reproducible bug is found, this ticket can be reopened.

UFS was mentioned as an issue as well, but wasn't tested?
