Feedback:

Please add functional flow diagrams with explanation to the documentation

Hello,

What I am completely missing in the pfSense documentation are functional diagrams / a description from what pfSense is doing.

It would really help, to configure the “firewall” and to make networks work, if there were functional descriptions in the documentation describing the firewall’s behavior.

Since I need to understand what is happening, I start drawing a picture of the firewall stack as I think the engine is working. I know there is more functionality then in my (attached) drawing, what is in should be correct. And there should be an description (but you will understand my perception of the firewalls behavoir I assume)

What I hope to archive with this mail, is that netgate does add functional descriptions including flow diagrams within the documentation. I think it is missing / could not find it.

Sincerely,

Louis

We have some diagrams on docs like https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/book/nat/ordering-of-nat-and-firewall-processing.html which is about as much as is really needed. The suggested diagram is overcomplicated and confusing.

Additionally, making tons of such diagrams when describing various features would be prohibitively time consuming.
