To keep things simple I typically have any all devices get their address by DHCP. For many of those devices I set a static mapping so they will always get the same address.

I mentally keep notes of where things would get placed when choosing a static map. It would be nice to be able to have Alias defined (phones, printers, laptops, infrastructure, VMs, etc.) to keep track of things. This goes along with another request to be able to filter the ARP table.
