Bug #14634
openThe default gateway icon is not updated when the default gateway is changed to none
0%
Description
Link to the discussion in question: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/180684/bug-in-default-gateway-selection
As described above:
Under the System menu, Routing, Gateways tab, Default gateway section.
In the fields:
Default gateway IPv4, and
Default gateway IPv6
set both = None. Save.
The message says:
"The gateway configuration has been changed.
The changes must be applied for them to take effect."
Click the Apply Changes button.
The globe icon still shows that the default gateway is WANGW. The same is shown in the dashboard.
The system continues working fine until a reboot, or until powering on the second server configured as backup (CARP/pfsync). After that, only LAN continues working, no internet access anymore (because WAN has no gateway).
It seems like an obvious question, but the fact of not stopping the internet access imediatly, it took me a lot of time to find out where the problem was. Two points here:
1 - it could have a better message after changing the default gateway field;
2 - it could apply the change immediatly, or print a message alerting the user about what will happen.
Thank you!

This looks likely to be the same cause as this: https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/14171#note-3
The command used fails to delete the default route.

I tried replicating this on 2.8 dev. The default routes themselves are removed (see Diagnostics > Routes), however the globe icon does remain even when the default gateway is set to None. Please verify if this is the case in your situation.

Tested on
23.09-RELEASE (amd64) built on Tue Oct 31 19:56:00 UTC 2023 FreeBSD 14.0-CURREN
I'm still seeing the globe icon even when setting the default gateway to none, but the default route is removed from the routing table.

The icon stays for me, when the default route is set to none. The changes were already applied and even after a reboot the icon was still there. I also tested on the latest development version with the same result:
24.03-DEVELOPMENT (amd64) built on Thu Nov 30 13:34:00 UTC 2023 FreeBSD 15.0-CURRENT
